LUNA RAE

I sprint back.

I don’t know how much time has passed. I don’t know what I’m doing. My head and body are disconnected from each other.

The parking lot and the club look just the way I left them–– the only thing missing is the dark-haired man who is now gone.

But his smell is not gone.

And while I have my panties in my hand, and I’m hoping to get to the bathroom before anyone sees me, the scent of his aftershave is still in my hair and my skin.

This man.

Ugh.

I’m as bad as he is.

I slip inside, and without glancing around, I beeline for the bathroom. Luckily, the restroom is empty. I lock myself in to assess the damage.

My hair is a mane of sweaty, tangled locks.

I run my fingers through my hair, trying to tame it. What about my face? My eyes?

My cheeks burn. My eyes tell a dirty story.

My skin is sweaty too.

I grab some paper towels and dab at my skin, my chest, neck, and boobs before cleaning up my legs and sex and sliding my panties up.

I fix my dress. Shit.

I still smell like him. My eyes fall on a bowl of potpourri. I rub some of it against my skin when I hear a knock on the door.

“Luna? Are you there?” Frankie asks.

“Huh? Wait a moment...”

Frantically, I look around before I remember that my phone is tucked in my pocket.

I pulled it out.

“Yes. Yes, Olivia. I will... Okay. Bye,” I say in a loud voice, hoping that Frankie can hear me.

I toss one last glance in the mirror before swinging the door open.

“Hey,” I say in a rushed voice.

Her gaze falls on my face.

She studies me, intrigued.

“What’s with you?” she asks, a faint smile lining her lips.

“Uh... Nothing. Why?”

“I thought you went home.”

“No, no...”

I grin reassuringly.

“I checked the bathroom a few moments ago,” she says, not buying my shit. “You weren’t here. Where were you?”

I lift my phone.

“I was on the phone. The signal was bad, so I stepped outside.”

She reads my eyes for a second.

“Is everything okay?” she asks.

Her question catches me unprepared.

“Yeah... Why?”

“With Olivia.”

“Oh, Olivia. Yeah. Everything’s fine. She was telling me about this place she found. A winery...” I say in response to her questioning look. “The wine is delicious.”

“Uh-huh. Okay...” she says softly, her eyes sliding down.

For a moment, I fear that something escaped my scrutiny and is giving me away.

“Well. Apparently, we’re going to Rex’s place,” she says in a different voice.

“Here?”

“Where else?”

“Yeah. You’re right.”

I laugh, amused.

“You’re weird,” she says.

“Why?”

“You’re in such a good mood.”

“And that’s weird how?”

“You tell me.”

I dismiss her suspicion with a clipped gesture.

“Let’s go.”

“Now you’re in a hurry,” she argues as I grab her elbow and nudge her out of the restroom.

“They’re probably in the front already, waiting for us,” I say before taking a short turn.

“What’s up with your dress?” she asks, watching my skirt twirl as I move. “It seems shorter.”

“Uh... Nothing. I just need to tug at it a little.”

I smooth my dress, fighting to conceal the wrinkles.
